4. Equipment

To play hockey your child will need the following things:

  • Clothing and shoes suitable for run around in. During the winter months, we don't stop training if it rains or it's cold, so warm clothing is necessary at times.
  • A pair of shin pads. When they start playing, they will just need a cheap pair of "football shin pads" available for places like Sports Direct. As they get older, they should consider getting a proper pair of hockey shin pads - these cover the ankles which football shin pads do not.
  • A gum shield. Ideally we would recommend one fitted by a dentist, but a basic one will provide some protection.
  • A hockey stick. You can borrow a stick from us initially, but most players prefer to get their own after a while.

Where do you recommend buying equipment?

We are fortunate to have two local traditional sports shops and would encourage you to support them if you can. Both of these stock a wide range of hockey equipment and will give you the opportunity to try out the equipment prior to purchase. The shop assistants are often hockey players so will be able to give you help.

There are also lots of online stores which specialise in hockey equipment. One we recommend is cricket-hockey.com which has a physical store near Salisbury. If you're a goal keeper, they are great since they have a full range of kit for you to try on.

Do we need to buy club kit?

We provide a free Academy t-shirt to all Primary Academy members once they have joined and come to 4 training sessions. This means that there is no requirement for primary-aged players to buy a playing shirt.

The club also has a set of playing shirts which players can borrow for U12 and U14 matches.

Should you want to, you can buy the following items via our Online Shop:

  • Playing shirt
  • Hoody
  • Socks

There is no requirement to buy any of these unless you want to.

We often find that parents delay getting hoodies and socks and buy them as birthday or Christmas presents.
